Rich Grula Journeyman folk troubadour hits his stride. Part earnest JT, part sly, laid-back comic, Cagno has broadened his sound nicely (the addition of dobro is excellent). He's the kind of folkie you'll want to have a beer with. Favorite track: The Part That Repeats.

I light up when you walk in this crowded room Like a match struck suddenly in the dark And above all of these strangers' voices You're the one that I hear And when we're lying in our own bed skin-to-skin, I awaken And through these red wine and blue smoke nights I will see you clear I want it pure I want it real I want it tender And I want it to last And when the hustle of this prison world Has got you weary to the bone When there's no ocean No rising island When there's no north star in heaven's dome, oh baby I am the heart that will lead you home When we go walking arm-in-arm Beneath the stars fixed in their flights Out where the Big Dipper holds A million galaxies inside of its cup I get filled, overflowing! with your scent that fills my days and my nights And everything I thought I knew about love, baby I will it give up I want it pure I want it real I want it tender And I want it to last And when the hustle of this prison world Has got you weary to the bone When there's no ocean No rising island When there's no north star in heaven's dome, oh baby I am the heart that will lead you I am the heart that will lead you I am the heart that will lead you home

Waking Life 05:05
PICTURE THIS, LATE ONE NIGHT YOU TRY TO SLEEP, SOMETHING’S NOT RIGHT YOU FLIP THE SWITCH, THE LIGHT STAYS ON YOU CHECK THE CLOCK & SOMETHING’S WRONG CAUSE YOU CAN’T FOCUS ON THE TIME THERE’S NO REASON ONLY RHYME YOU TRY & LAY DOWN ON YOUR BED YOUR BODY FLOATS AWAY INSTEAD.... AND AS YOU’RE FLYING, YOU KEEP REACHING FOR SOME MEANING, FOR SOME TEACHING BUT IT’S JUST THE LETTING GO THAT’S THE PART YOU NEED TO KNOW SO NOW YOU THINK, YOU MIGHT BE DEAD YOUR LIFE DON’T LOOK, QUITE LIKE THEY SAID BUT WHO ARE THEY?, WHAT DO THEY KNOW? YOU’RE THE ONE, WHO CALLS THE SHOW BUT FROM UP HERE YOU SEE IT ALL & IT SEEMS A LONG, LONG WAY TO FALL AND IN THAT ONE MOMENT OF FEAR YOU GIVE UP AND IT COMES CLEAR... YOU AWAKE, OUT OF YOUR HEAD AND IN THE UNIVERSE INSTEAD A SPECK OF DUST, A GRAIN OF SAND BUT HERE AND NOW YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR TINY WORLD JUST OPENED WIDE NO NEED TO STAY INSIDE AND HIDE THE TRUTH & JOY THAT YOU GIVE ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT LIVE © 2014 Gregg Cagno, ℗ Greggnotes Music ASCAP

We met back in Brooklyn in 1969 but Nonno on the Cagno side came from another time Born there 1917 the middle son of 3 1st of his generation in the new country there were 7 all together filling up the house a small railroad apartment with homemade pasta strung around he became metal worker, bringing home an honest wage but music lived inside him and came out on the days C In the alley with his Garcia Vega, Whistling in his folding chair H with the birds up in the trees, he’d be trading melodies O & blowin off of Gravesend Bay, there was always a cool breeze R & that’s how I remember him, on Bay 11th Street It was at 23rd and 4th, where he met his future bride in a candystore in South Slope while the dogs waited outside took her down to Coney Island, on a Nathan’s date quickly married her at 18, her shoe broken on the way In 1941, with their 1st born coming soon Uncle Sam sent him a letter, & told him “I Want You” & The day before he had to go, they told him he could stay So they brought up 4 sons, fishing by the Belt Parkway His 4 sons had 8 others, not a girl among the crew he taught some geometry, & others to shoot pool He taught me piano, as I watched him play by ear Bing Crosby, Willie Nelson or whatever you’d wanna hear He had a giggle like a jester, when he’d get you going drove a bright orange ford maverick, by the time I got to know him We weren’t ready when he left, but I guess you never are and I think of him each time, I smell a cheap cigar © 2014 Gregg Cagno, ℗ Greggnotes Music ASCAP

Zodiac Blues 03:47
I woke up this mornin', and knew something had changed my room felt rotated, and so did my brain I thought to blame the tequila, but that just didn’t seem fair so i checked on facebook, to see what had been shared It seems some old Astrologer, had a bit of a wine & decided that the moon, has left us misaligned So I’d gone to sleep a Capricorn, & woken Sagittarius & I’ve just begun to see, what the implication was where I used to be the epitome, of a hard workin practical man a good manager who tended to prefer, stickin with the traditional plan now i’m frequently seeking, answers to the big questions of life an archer who’s an extrovert & in a changing world I thrive so I’m rewriting my mantra, i’ll quit my job and grow my hair i feel so lucky being told what to be, who too see, how to feel, what to wear So everyone gets shifted, one sign back from where you’re born and the dawning of Aquarius, is now the age of Capricorn so I guess that means the hippies, are now the practical ones bet they knew that all along and just kept on having fun To make things line up right, they added a 13th sign it’s Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder, if he don’t stop that he’ll go blind & now I guess chart readers, are gonna have to give refunds to make up for the stuff they made up, or just take the money and run CHORUS Oh ain’t it fun letting your life be run by the stars, the moon & the sun © 2014 Gregg Cagno, ℗ Greggnotes Music ASCAP

I was born in Clinton in 69 just up this hill and just in time for those lovely folks of mine to get a deduction the younger bro of just two boys breaking things and making noise but following the sound of joy without caution Armstrong was walkin on the moon and I was hearing tunes about the things you do for love and the 50 ways to leave wantin to be rhinestone cowboys rocket men & summer breeze i had no idea what the words meant but i sure did like the sound of AM radio in mom's VW singing while we drove through town We grew up sail'ing on the reservoir and at clinton point theatre & ice cream was never far at the Daz-o-del clinton pubic K thru 8 North Hunterdon for high school days i can't think of a better way or a better place Michael Jackson sliding cross the moon and i was hearing tunes about open arms & walkin this way & how no one is to blame 867-5309 & being born in the USA started learning what the words meant but i mostly liked the sound hangin out without a worry singing as we drove thru town now here we are back in this place with your familiar faces and it's great to see my old friends with husbands wives babies and the circle all comes back again and the songs play on and it's a Black Potatoe Moon and we're singin tunes about Fuzzy Dice and Backroad Drivers how the world ain't slowin down kangaroos and how sweet life is just wingin and prayerin yourself around now i know what all the words mean but mostly i just like the sound jammin out without a worry right here in our little town singing in our little town © 2014 Gregg Cagno, ℗ Greggnotes Music ASCAP

If the heart does the feeling and the mind does the thinking then one feels confused while the other is thinking of you I keep telling the heart not to hurry I keep telling mind there’s no worry but there’s a long history between us 3 we call tend to disagree If the mind needs to know and heart needs to grow then I’m left with the wonder, trying not to fall under a spell of distraction that keeps you in mind a knee-jerk reaction that keeps my heart on the line how painful to be watching us 3 get fooled by the same old story If the mind hasn’t tried and the heart needs to hide then we drift through this dance never taking a chance that the heart opens up tells the mind all it knows and the mind then reveals why it’s been so opposed to the 3 of us acting as 1, not reacting to fear and staying right here © 2014 Gregg Cagno, ℗ Greggnotes Music ASCAP

Produced by Jimmy Heffernan

Worth the Wait features 11 originals alongside of 2 classics that have become Cagno set standards. Together with producer Jimmy Heffernan (longtime Nashville sideman for acts such as Joe Diffie & Brad Paisley) Cagno serves up his thoughtful and melodic songs in a Folk/Rock/Americana/Country blend that features his smooth, soulful voice and distinctive open-tuned guitar playing.

“The songs all came from my time living in New Hope, PA and were very inspired by the vibrant musical community I was lucky to be part of there” says Gregg of the recording. “They deal with topics from Italian family history (Nonno Lorenzo), to philosophy (Waking Life, inspired by Richard Linklater’s film of the same title), to patience in marriage (Worth the Wait), to adoption (Threads to Braids, written for the Delaware Valley chapter of Families With Children From China), to growing up in the 70’s & 80’s (Clinton Times), to the dangers of technology (Butt Dialed) and more...”

Backing Cagno is a diverse lineup of stellar musicians including Heffernan on dobro, pedal steel & mandolin, Karl Dietel (The Samples) on piano, violinist Carol Sharar, percussionist David Anthony, Nashville drummer Lonnie Wilson (Brooks and Dunn), with harmonies by singers Maggie Anderson, Carol Brooks Meyners and 7-year-old Lia D'Alessandro.

The first single from the record “The Part That Repeats” (a humorous romp through the elements of a ‘hit’ song) features the reassembled House Band from Jam Night at New Hope’s Havana where Gregg spent a few years of Tuesday nights in the mid-2000’s – bass: Jerry Monk, drums: Marty Paglione, electric guitar: Joe Vadala, keyboards: Bill Levinson, saxophone: Tim Varvel.

A native of Clinton, NJ now making his home in Philadelphia, PA, Cagno is a two time ASCAP award winner for the folk genre, was a finalist in the Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk competition and has a song in the Smithsonian Folkways archives. He's had the opportunity to open for folk/rock stars Pete Seeger, James Taylor, America & Poco and also the honor of playing on The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Millenium Stage.
